Brief: Lady Flames defeat Shorter

The Lady Flames volleyball team beat their rival, Shorter University, yesterday in a thrilling five-set match.

In the first set, Lee was up 22-15, but Shorter caught up and tied it at 24-24. The set lasted until the Lady Flames broke through and won the set 36-34.

Shorter came back and won the second set. After trailing in the third set, the Lady Flames fought back. Senior setter Hannah Matthews tipped it over to win the third set 29-27.

The Lady Flames struggled with their defensive game in the fourth set, losing 18-25.

In the fifth set, Lee brought the momentum from the beginning and it propelled them to victory, winning 15-11.

Senior Quinne James was a key piece in the team’s win. With the help of her teammates, she was always able to find the opening on the opponent’s side of the court, winning the team several points from her hits.

“I looked at everybody at the beginning of the fifth set and said, ‘Y’all, we’re winning this game,’” said James. “Everyone bought in and really played together and it really made all the difference.”

The team will be traveling to Birmingham, Alabama this upcoming Friday to play against Spring Hill College.
